Now that we have your attention… here’s how content marketing really works: it’s all business.

The Content Marketing Long Game

Since we don’t want to waste anyone’s time, let’s begin with a painful truth. You’re not going to get rich overnight from content. If you want that, content marketing is not for you. Sure, you might get lucky, but you could also win the lottery. If you are truly business minded though, your content will make a difference.

“If you’re in it for the long haul, you will eventually outpace those looking to get rich quick.”

Too many companies think that just by publishing a few blogs or social media posts, the gravy will begin to flow. It never works like that. BUT… content is a way to create real business growth. If you’re in it for the long haul, you will eventually outpace those looking to get rich quick.

Keep Hammering

When it comes to content, quantity is key. Yes, that’s right. Quantity is just as important as quality. The number of pieces of content you put out there continuously increases your chances to get noticed. Yes, each post should be of the best quality possible, but you also have to post on a regular basis. It could be everyday, once a week or twice a month. The key is to stick with it.

Content quantity accomplishes several goals:

  1. Increases your digital footprint (i.e. chances of getting noticed)
  2. Keeps your site fresh and populated which search engines like
  3. Provides you with data to guide further content efforts

Leverage Current Events for Fresh Content

If your industry has big news coming up, write about it. Put your expert insight to use and comment on how you think events will change things. It might be a good idea to brainstorm with team members to come up with a unique angle. People love predictions, so you could frame your content around soothsaying, for example:

“How Google’s New Poodle Algorithm Will Transform B2B Commerce Forever” (please don’t search for “google poodle”- it’s made up!)

“How Self Driving Cars Will Eliminate The Need For Windshield Wiper Fluid”

Pay Your Winners

Already have a piece of content that’s crushing it? Consider putting some money behind that pony and promote it on social media. If it’s popular, you can get even more mileage out of a good thing.

“Try spinning your winners to target specific audiences with re-purposes content. Who might be interested?”

The next step in this strategy is to write topics around that successful piece. You can even produce other content to accompany it, such as info-graphics, videos, audios or free PDF downloads.

Try spinning your winners to target specific audiences with re-purposed content. Who might be interested?

Spruce Up Your Best Ponies

As your content library grows, you’ll notice certain posts stand out. Every quarter or so, go back and re-optimize these articles. Update them with new relevant data and maybe even add in new keywords to rank for. Keep your well performing content in shape to continue running strong.
