Dan’s Review of President Obama’s Recovery.gov Site Appears In Today’s Baltimore Sun

Hey all,

Last week, I was interviewed as Baltimore’s SEO expert by the Baltimore Sun. Several Baltimore web consultants and I critiqued the Obama administration’s Recovery.gov website. The article appeared in today’s print and online editions (March 10, 2009). Overall the site got pretty good reviews from some of us tech geeks in town.

Here’s the Baltimore Sun review of Recovery.gov.

You raise a good point. Its clear their focus isn’t on building SEO traffic. However, recovery.gov might be the exception, not the rule. How many people are really searching for recovery.gov without directly typing it in? In other words, do the site operators really care about SEO? Plus, they have a spokesperson who can drive more traffic to their site with a single mention than any celebrity’s endorsement!

Very cool, Dan. It seems like most .gov’s ignore SEO best practices. Often they’re able to get away with it because of all the link love, but they really should consider making their sites more findable.

    Here’s an update on Recovery.gov…

Mario Armstrong is reporting that the government has awarded a $9,250,000 (yes, over nine million dollar) contract to redo Recovery.gov. Visit his website for a great discussion on this baffling expenditure.
